1. WHAT IS SILVER

Silver is a chemical element with Ag symbol. It can be found in nature as metal whose state is zero (Ago) or in combination with other elements, forming compounds such as sulfides or chlorides, bromides and iodides of silver, in the state of oxidation +1 (Ag+). One of the well-known properties is the antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of microorganisms.

2. WHAT IS COLLOIDAL SILVER

Colloidal silver is finely divided metallic silver particles. This particle size makes colloidal silver a very effective agent. For the fact of oxidation state zero (Ago), colloidal silver is less reactive.

3. BACKGROUND OF THE SILVER LIKE BACTERICIDE

The use of silver as a bactericide & fungicide is known for more than 20 centuries. Since the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations used silver containers to preserve milk and wine. Later, in the Crusades, it was common practice to add a silver coin in containers to preserve liquids. Having learned from ancient civilizations' knowledge -the Roman and Greek's- how to apply the antimicrobial properties of Silver, Laboratorios Argenol aims to contribute to a better world with its silver-based products.

In the nineteenth century, use in medicine was widespread. With the advent of antibiotics, the use of silver for its antimicrobial properties declined.

However, problems arising from the emergence of antibiotic resistant strains have led to renewed interest in silver, as antibiotic agent. Recent studies have shown that silver particles have effects against a wide spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and some also exhibit anti-fungal and antiviral activity.

4. SILVER TODAY

Currently, silver compounds are being used in many applications to control microbial growth. Examples of applications include the coating of catheters and surgical materials, preparation of synthetic compounds for dentistry, wound healing and burn treatment medical devices, homeopathic medicine, personal care products, sewage...

Silver particles are being used in the food industry for water purification and for the design of new systems of packaging with antimicrobial properties, as well as appliances coatings and surfaces in contact with food.

The textile industry is also incorporating this metal for the preparation of technical material. Sportswear to prevent odors or lab coats to prevent bacteria growth.

Furthermore, as a result of the entry into force in January 2006 of the ban by the European Union regarding the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in feed industry, the use of silver metal has re-emerged as an important alternative due to the positive effects that have been observed.

5. TANNIC ACID DERIVATES

Tannic acid derivates are used for its vegetal origin astringent activity in pharmaceutical industry, with no intestinal motility alteration. It is an intestinal absorbent which is indicated for the treatment of common diarrhea in infants and children, as well as diarrhea caused by alteration of the intestinal flora, such as those associated with antibiotic use.
